How XRP escrow works
In December 2017 Ripple locked 55 billion XRP into a series of on-chain time-based escrow contracts to make its supply schedule predictable. Each month, up to 1 billion XRP unlocks; Ripple uses a portion for operations and institutional sales and re-escrows the remainder into new contracts dated years into the future. Because the lockups are enforced by the XRP Ledger itself — not a promise — the escrowed balance is verifiable by anyone.
